Petronas still eyeing Cambodia

After closing the last of its 19 petrol stations in Cambodia in April 2010, Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) is again eyeing the country’s oil and gas (O&G) sector. This will see Chevron and its partners developing the country’s first offshore oil field this year.

According to Petronas president and CEO Tan Sri Shamsul Azhar Abbas, the Malaysian national oil company will deliberate on the merits of re-entering the Indochinese nation should the company be able to work out a win-win deal with the Cambodian authorities. …

Cambodia’s offshore oil fields are categorized under Blocks A to F, which are also claimed by Thailand. Both countries are negotiating how they will jointly capitalise on the O&G reserves within the Gulf of Thailand.

Onshore [sic], Cambodia was reported to have licensed blocks to state-run Vietnam Oil and Gas Group or PetroVietnam, and Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corp, or Jogmec. …

Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd president and CEO Dr Abd Hapiz Abdullah was quoted as saying that the company is planning to grow its regional presence in Myanmar and Cambodia from 2013.

Maybank to increase branches in Cambodia to 20, from 12

Maybank Bhd is looking to increase its presence in Cambodia, by raising the number of its branches to 20 from 12 currently.

Speaking at a public panel dialogue organised by The Wharton School about the economic prospects of the ASEAN region, Maybank’s CEO Datuk Sri Abdul Wahid Omar said he regarded Cambodia, amongst other ASEAN member countries, as its home market.

“Maybank is now one of the top ASEAN banks with the widest presence across the ten ASEAN countries. 36% of our operations are outside of Malaysia, contributing to some 30% to group profits.” he said. …

Lion Forest Industries’ RM78.3m Cambodian Investment

Kuala Lumpur–Lion Forest Industries BHD (LFIB) is acquiring 58,000 hectares under an economic land concession (ELC) in Cambodia for US$26.1 million (RM78.3 million) to cultivate oil palm and rubber trees.

LFIB said on Monday, Aug 29 the concession would not be less than 70 years under the master service agreement.

It said its unit Harta Impiana Sdn Bhd had on Aug 29 issued an instruction notice to Seng Enterprise Co. Ltd, identifying six parcels of economic land concession. Read more
