Can Tho links with Cambodian province

The Can Tho city and Cambodian province of Battambang have signed a memorandum of understanding on economic co-operation that covers commerce, investment, and tourism.

The two sides will create favourable conditions for businesses from the two localities to co-operate in areas like processing of farm produce, goods distribution, investing in processing plants for farm and aquaculture produce, animal husbandry, and tourism. …

Several Can Tho businesses are seeking opportunities to co-operate with their Battambang counterparts to purchase and process paddy and rice for export.

Located in the north-west of Cambodia nearly 300km from the capital Phnom Penh, Battambang has a population of over 1 million of whom 81 per cent are farmers. The province harvests 2 million tonnes of rice a year and has innumerable ponds and lakes suitable for aquaculture. …

ASEAN issues declaration to promote regional community

The 21st ASEAN Summit opened in Phnom Penh yesterday under the theme One Community, One Destiny, with meetings during the three-day event expected to tackle such issues as measures to build the ASEAN Community, regional peace and security, and strengthening co-operation between the bloc’s member states.

The event recognised ASEAN’s major achievements over the past 45 years, especially recent efforts in building a common community, said Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen in addressing the opening of the summit. …

Vietnam asks Laos to review impacts of hydropower dam

Viet Nam has urged Laos to continue its research on the environmental impacts of the planned Xayaburi Dam on the Mekong River. …

Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Luong Thanh Nghi made the statement at a regular press briefing in Ha Noi yesterday when answering a question about Viet Nam’s stance on the construction of Xayaburi dam in Laos.

Nghi added that he hoped Laos will work with Viet Nam, Cambodia and Thailand in conducting careful and comprehensive research on the cumulative impacts on the environment, economics and society of all hydro-power plants expected to be built on the Mekong River.

Cambodia offers plenty of opportunities for Vietnamese exporters although there is intense competition from countries such as Thailand and China, delegates said at a conference in HCM City last Thursday.

Le Quoc Phong, general director of the Binh Dien Fertiliser Group, said the Cambodian market had been familiar with fertilisers imported from Thailand and China. Therefore, the company faced difficulties in the initial step of penetrating the market.

Thanks to providing training courses for its sale agents as well as farmers, the company had gradually won consumers’ confidence in its products. …

Key Viet Nam-Cambodia border marker inaugurated

The Vietnamese and Cambodian Government leaders yesterday chaired a ceremony inaugurating marker 314, the last one in numerical order on the countries’ land border.

The marker is between My Duc commune, Ha Tien town, in the southern province of Kien Giang, and Russey Srok Khang Lech commune, Kampong Trach district, in the Cambodian province of Kampot.

This is the second time Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and his Cambodian counterpart, Hun Sen, have attended the inauguration of land border markers. They showed the resolve and efforts by both governments in implementing treaties, agreements and deals on border and territorial work, helping the two sides complete all work on border demarcation and marker planting.

Dung stressed the event marked a joint success of the two nations in building a borderline of peace, friendship and cooperation for development. …

The third Viet Nam-Cambodia investment cooperation conference was also held in Kien Giang under the joint chairmanship of Prime Minister Dung and his Cambodian counterpart, Hun Sen.

Dung said the Vietnamese Government has taken measures to facilitate operations of businesses in Cambodia. Viet Nam wanted the Cambodian Government and ministries to create further conditions for Vietnamese firms investing and operating in Cambodia, he said. …

Cambodian forum focuses on ASEAN community

PHNOM PENH: The 8th Cambodia-Asia Economic Forum kicked off here on Saturday, focusing on reviewing the ASEAN achievements in the past 45 years and looking at opportunities and challenges toward the realisation of an ASEAN community by 2015.

The two-day forum has been attending by some 300 economists, academics, researchers, and policy makers from Asian countries.

Speaking at the opening of the forum, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Keat Chhon said ASEAN has made tremendous progress in all areas of co-operation in the last 45 years, but challenges are still ahead toward the community. …

Interest-free loans to lure businesses

HCM CITY — The HCM City government will offer interest-free loans to local companies doing business in the city, Laos and Cambodia.

With a stimulus package of VND8 trillion (US$381 million), the city has approved interest-fee loans of up to VND100 billion ($4.7 million) over a seven-year period.

HCM City hosts Lower Mekong Initiative Disaster Management workshop

PM Dung Urges Expanded Co-operation With Cambodia
